High Def Video Conferencing for Higher Ed?

Filed under: Uncategorized — Dan Karleen @ 12:22 pm

So let’s say your VP of executive education drops by your desk and tells you she’s got $600k to drop and wants to spend it to set the program apart in a very technologically hip yet practical way. Well, here’s a suggestion for her: high definition video conferencing or “telepresence” as Cisco is calling it. Now the London executives enrolled in the program can easily join the Palo Alto executives in a virtual-immersive executive education experience without the expense and inconvenience of traveling across the pond.

What are the specs? Glad she asked. Three 65″ plasmas, 1080p, compressed using H.264 to 3-3.5 Megabits/second, all-IP based, and all controlled through a telephone. It’s essentially a turn-key package you can set up in virtually any room. The $600k will cover a triple-plasma setup in London and a triple-plasma setup in Palo Alto. Supports smart boards? Check. Supports document sharing? Check. Recording and multi-casting are coming soon.

Read more about it and grab the video press conference/demo from Robert Scoble’s blog.

Ready to hire computers to write your marketing pieces and press releases?

Filed under: Uncategorized — Dan Karleen @ 11:31 am

Today Rocketboom mentions that Thomson (Peterson’s former parent) is using computers to write news stories. Reportedly they’ve been at it since March. I wonder if any of the readers noticed.

Friday Update - Is anybody home?

Filed under: Uncategorized — Dan Karleen @ 4:21 pm

Well, it’s been a busy week, and I wanted to update you on what’s up. I’ve been busy helping build some new sites for Peterson’s (including some where our higher ed clients will be featured nicely, I might add), pitching in with SEO efforts here and there, doing interviews for the ongoing study on admissions blogging, and preparing to say a few words at a Monday morning breakfast at a Council of Graduate Schools dean’s event in Cambridge.

What to make of all this? Well, things are paying off. We launched a massive SEO campaign earlier this year, and traffic and student connections with higher ed clients are way up as a result. We’ve also recently launched the most intense application of RSS in the graduate world that I know of, by pushing out updates from thousands of our clients via RSS, so that students can subscribe to updates in their disciplines of interest. (Check it out here; more on this to come.) Also, we’ve been seeing strong demand for a series of webinars on new media we’re putting together for clients.

And, I’m really excited about heading up through New England this weekend. First of all, I’ll get to spend a few minutes talking to a bunch of graduate school deans about all things new media. What will we cover? How about YouTube, LinkedIn, and SecondLife, for starters? It also means I’ll have a chance to connect with some fellow researchers from SNCR who are based up there and get some in-person updates on how things are going with them.

As far as the whole Rocketboom thing goes, well, I don’t have any comment at the moment (still baffled by the lack of clear information coming out), other than to say I hope that Andrew and Amanda patch things up soon, or else best of luck to them both.

Finally, a long overdue and big shout out to Paul Csogi, my amazing associate in all these efforts. Somehow he and his wife managed to find time in all this to have their first–a very healthy boy. Welcome to the world, Aden Stone!

Live blogging the CASE podcasting seminar

Filed under: Podcasting, Uncategorized — Dan Karleen @ 3:31 pm

Right now I’m attending CASE’s web based seminar on podcasting. We’ve been promoting this seminar as part of HigherEd BlogCon. Mark Trammell, from the University of Florida, is leading the seminar. He is doing a great job, and I like how he’s providing lots of examples of free services you can use to create and post podcasts. He’s talking about ODEO, Podcast Pickle, Wordpress, Audacity, Feedburner, GarageBand, and others–all of the big names I would expect. I am probably bugging him, because I have typed in a bunch of questions and FYI’s for him. :) It’s not clear how many people are attending this, but I hope that it’s well attended, because there’s been a lot of practical information presented in a fashion that can be widely understood.

Here is a link to one of UF’s podcasts.
