Established in 1861, Chapman University is a private, coeducational university located in Orange, California and Irvine, California, in the western region of the United States. 

Schmid College of Science and Technology emphasizes a personalized, faculty-led, hands-on education, encouraging undergraduate and graduate students to conduct and present research in their fields of study.

The state-of-the-art 140,000 square foot Keck Center for Science and Engineering is the newest facility on Chapman University’s Orange campus. The Keck Center encourages graduate students to collaborate and engage in experiential learning. The 2020 U.S. News & World Report ranks Chapman University as one of the best colleges in America and in 2019, Chapman University was ranked 5th among master’s-level universities in the Western US.

Chapman University’s Schmid College is named after the Schmid family. Over the last forty years, the Schmid family have made significant contributions to Chapman University.

Research is an essential function to advancing science and technology and is a vital part of the student experience at Schmid College of Science and Technology. Students receive first-hand experience in funded research projects of societal importance, co-author papers in nationally recognized journals, and present at national and international conferences.

Research labs at Schmid College of Science and Technology include: 

Chapman Catalysis Research Lab, Chapman University Forecast and Hazards Lab, Comparative Biomaterials Lab, Food Protection Lab, Food Analysis Lab, Food Irradiation Lab, Kim Environmental Geochemistry Lab, and the Verkhiver Research Group in Computational Biosciences. 

The Keck Center offers cutting edge tools and technology. Tools available for use include a Microthermics UHT system for beverage processing, a mini spray dryer, 240 gallon saltwater aquarium, 3D printers, a Diode-Pumped Solid State (DPSS) Class 3B Laser, high resolution imaging tools, high performance computing technology, and a Ceica Cryostat Brain Tissue Slicer. 

The Keck Center offers collaborative lab spaces such as the Beckman Computing Lab, Core Labs for Molecular and Environmental Analysis, Food Processing Lab, Microscopy Lab, Microchip Technology Software Engineering and Circuit Design Labs.

Schmid College is proud to be affiliated with the Institute for Quantum Studies, an organization which includes a 2013 Nobel Prize recipient and a 2010 Presidential Medal of Honor Winner.

Chapman University’s Schmid College of Science and Technology is proud to offer the following graduate programs: 

M.S. or PhD in Computational and Data Sciences

This challenging program develops a student skill set to construct mathematical models, develop quantitative analysis techniques, and use computers to help solve real-world problems. Both MS and Ph.D. degrees in Computational and Data Sciences are available.

M.S. in Food Science 

As a student of the Food Science program, you will apply scientific principles to study the properties of food and develop innovative ways to process and package foods resulting in safe, sustainable and nutritious food choices. Our state-of -the-art labs allow for a hands on learning experience unmatched in Southern California. Because of Chapman’s location in the heart of the vibrant food industry, our program’s reputation for preparing outstanding students- career placement is excellent.  

M.S. Food Science and MBA 

This “one of a kind” program is ideal for students interested in a demanding career in the food industry. The Schmid College of Science and Technology works with the Argyros School of Business and Economics to provide an engaging, joint degree with flexibility and small class sizes. Students in this program go on to rewarding roles in management, entrepreneurship and consulting.

Prospective students are encouraged to review the Graduate Application Deadlines based on their particular graduate program. Programs that accept applications after the deadline on a space-available basis will be noted. Please visit the Application page to view a particular program application and requirements. 

A non-refundable application fee is $60 through the online application system. Students are required to submit all official transcripts; applications will not be considered complete until all materials are received. Most programs require a minimum of two letters of recommendation. Some programs require a statement of intent with specific information included in your statement.

Students interested in need-based financial aid should submit the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) or the California Dream Act Application if they are not eligible for federal financial aid.
