Overview

Tuft Computer Science: A Leader in Its Field

Founded in 1852, Tufts University today ranks among the top educational and research institutions in the country. "U.S. News and World Report" ranks it 28th among universities nation-wide. The well-funded Department of Computer Science provides an open, collaborative environment with an interdisciplinary approach in which students can pursue a graduate degrees and certificates. Faculty member and graduate research initiatives are funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF), the Office of Naval Research (ONR), the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the Jet Propulsion Labs, and Air Force Research Labs, Luce, Honda, and other organizations. The departments offers a Ph.D. in Computer Science degree program, a Joint Ph.D. in Cognitive Science degree program, a Master of Science (M.S.) in Computer Science degree program, a post-bac minor in computer science program, a certificate in computer science program, and a certificate in human-computer interaction program.

Leading Edge Research and Development

The Department of Computer Science is a leading hub of interdisciplinary research in machine learning; computational and systems biology; human-computer interaction; human-robotics interaction; robotics; programming languages; electronic design automation; educational technologies; analytics; visualization; graphics; data mining; big data; and other areas of computer science. Tufts graduate students also benefit from the strong connection between the university and many of the Boston area industry and academic institutions.

Meaningful Research Opportunities for Computer Science Graduate Students

Tufts University researchers collaborate to bring faculty members, graduate and undergraduate students to the forefront of interdisciplinary research in computer science. For example, Professor Robert Jacob's Human Computer Interaction Lab is working with Professor Sergio Fantini's group from the Biomedical Engineering Department to find a way to directly connection the brain to a computer through functional near infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS), a non-invasive form of brain-imaging technology. Professor Soha Hassoun, the chair of the Department of Computer Science, and Professor Kyongbum Lee from the Department Chemical and Biological Engineering are leading a research team to explore new computational approaches to predict how drug chemicals impact human cells.

The Ph.D. in Computer Science

Students pursuing Ph.D. in Computer Science degrees at Tufts University earn 20 credits of coursework to gain competencies in the fields of data structures and algorithms; and the theory of computation; computer architecture and assembly language; and programming languages. Students conduct research dissertations and pass oral and written examinations. Ph.D. candidates are eligible for fellowships and research and teaching assistantships.

The Joint Ph.D. in Cognitive Science

The Joint Ph.D. in Cognitive Science degree program is a collaborative effort of the departments of psychology, computer science, and child development. Students each complete the Ph.D. in Computer Science degree program with a minimum of 12 cognitive science courses.

The M.S. in Computer Science

Tufts University offers one of the most innovative and progressive Master of Science (M.S.) in Computer Science degree programs in the nation. Students complete 10 credits of coursework and M.S. research projects. Students may complete this program on a full-time or part-time basis. Graduates of this program have assumed positions with leading labs, such as IBM, Google, MIT, Microsoft, and other prominent institutions.

The Post-Bac Minor in Computer Science

The Post-Baccalaureate Minor in Computer Science is a unique program that serves as a bridge between a non-CS undergraduate degree and a career in Computer Science. Students with non-technical degrees in the liberal arts or engineering can complete this 4-course program to prepare themselves for graduate work in technology or for positions within the high-tech industry. Students must each complete or have completed an introductory course in computer science.

The Certificate in Computer Science

Tufts also offers a 4-course computer science graduate certificate program. Students receive full credit for these courses if they decide to pursue master's degrees.

The Certificate in Human Computer Interaction

Tufts offers a unique graduate certificate program that allows student to explore emerging issues in human computer interaction. Program courses explore how user interface can serve as the bottleneck for developing products to meet market needs and how to solve user interface problems.

Online MS in Computer Science

The Tufts online Master of Science in Computer Science program provides graduate students with the best of both worlds: a student-centered experience led by innovative faculty at a top-ranked research university and the convenience of an online graduate program that provides students with the real-time, interactive experience of on-campus instruction..

Tufts University

Tufts University is located in the greater Boston area with campuses in Chinatown in Boston, in Medford/Somerville, and in Grafton. The university also has a campus in Talloires, France. Graduate students can leverage the university's location to take advantage of the wide range of career and entertainment opportunities available in the Boston area.
